He Put a Smile on Our Faces

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

When we feel life is going fine, there are situations that just pop up in our life out of nowhere, situations that we don't see coming our way at all, that send us on a roller coaster ride of tough days, mixed emotions and a blank future. These are times when our minds go into turmoil, grappling with the question of “Why, God, why?!”. The times when all we know deep within tells us to be still and trust in the Lord, but we just can’t!

It was just 9 months into our marriage, even before the rosy glow of newly married bliss had faded, when cancer came as an uninvited guest into our life, completely devastating us both!

‘But he looked perfectly okay, even now he doesn’t look sick, then how could this be?’ became the endless rhetoric in my mind. Those were days when I didn’t even know what to pray for, a miracle, a healing? Or just enough strength to get through the situation?

But God was very much present right there in the middle of our pain and our lostness, placing the right people at the right places at the right time, all unbeknown to us. As our compassionate comforter, he was there to comfort us and our loved ones in the face of all the uncertainty. He was right by our side, when we felt lonely. He provided peace in our hearts, during the tough post-treatment days. He put a beautiful & courageous smile on our faces that oddly seemed to comfort many people whom we met.

Even now, three years down, there are days when I battle with the unanswered question of why we had to go through this trial. When I wonder why our lives couldn't have been like that of other newly married couples!

But I know he hears me because I finally found my answer through this beautiful verse from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, ‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.’
